What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index), is a term determined by the World Health Organisation in 1997. The purpose is to set a scale defining whether an individual is over or under his or her ideal body weight. This calculation method became popular long after its invention by Belgian mathematician, Adolph Quetelet.
What is your BMI telling?
The different levels of BMI help to evaluate your corpulence of a set scale. The five principal levels are:
- Malnutrition and undernutrition
- Normal index
- Obesity (divided in 3 levels)
The BMI takes into consideration your size and weight and is aimed at adults between 18 and 65 years old. Hence, BMI calculations are not applicable for: Children, pregnant women, athletes and seniors. For example, professional athletes’ BMI will be incorrect as their muscle mass differs from most people. They do not fill the requirements for this test.

According to the data compiled by the Asia Roundtable on Good Innovation for Improved Nutrition, 5.1 % of the Philippines population suffers from obesity and 23.6% is overweight. Even if these remain among the lowest rates in Asia, these numbers represent around 18 million Filipinos.
